“To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the most pleasant sensations in the world.” –Freya Stark

Whether you are visiting with a loved one, the family, or on your own, this incredible seaside town will bring out the romantic in everyone. When you are here, you will feel far removed from the “real world” as Carmel-by-the-Sea, California lends itself very much to a storybook setting. It is a 2-hour drive south from San Francisco.

Carmel Sign Small FormatThe best way to experience this incredible seaside town is by walking it. And it is certainly a walkable town. By and large, Carmel does not use numbered street addresses, and this encourages wandering. But oh, what wonderful wanderings you will have, as you stroll by gorgeous Victorian buildings and tiny cottages. Many of the streets are narrow, especially in the residential areas and there are not many sidewalks, but even the drivers here are so relaxed, strolling along the street is not unheard of.

A fun fact: there are no street lights in the town.

If you’ve got a furry friend, all the better, for Carmel is a very pet-friendly town. Here are some of the best ways to experience Carmel.

Things to See and Do in Carmel

Of course, the Pacific Ocean in all its glory is the main draw, and there is ample opportunity for scenic walks along the coastline, or spending a day at the beach. But Carmel inevitably beckons with its laid-back, beach town atmosphere. Ocean Avenue is the place to be for a leisurely afternoon of shopping and eating, with a hidden treasure around most every corner.

There is an enchanting village ambiance here that begs to explore, where you will find artisan boutiques, art galleries, one-of-a-kind shops, and enticing restaurants serving world-class fare. At Ocean Avenue, Carmel, CA, enjoy Carmel Beach, which has a surprisingly secluded feel given its location, with fine white sand and rocky bluffs. Add in the lovely cypress trees, and you have a recipe for paradise. However, this beach is not made for swimming, as rip currents and sneaker waves are common.

No visit to Carmel would be complete without going to the iconic San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission, Carmel, CA. Founded in 1771 by Father Junipero Serra of Spain, it is one of the most beautiful and interesting missions in California and is still an active parish church.

No one can go to Carmel and not take the 17-mile drive, Pebble Beach, CA through Pebble Beach. If you ever get a chance, stay and one of the rooms at The Pebble Beach Lodge, Pebble Beach, CA. My wife and I were able to stay there in 2000 for the US Open.

My favorite thing to do is walk the town on a personalized wine walk, interspersed with time in multiple, top-notch art studios.

Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't include Porta Bella Restaurant, Carmel, CA. I met the owner, Faisal Nimri while I was there. He's a great guy and the lifeblood of the restaurant. If you see him spend some time talking to him. It will be well worth your time.
